NYC Shooter Shane Devon Tamura

Shane Tamura, born in Hawaii and raised in Santa Clarita, California, later settled in Las Vegas. He arrived at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, parked his black BMW nearby, and walked across the plaza with an M4 rifle in plain sight. Entering the building, he opened fire in the lobby—wounding NYPD officer Didarul Islam and a security guard—before heading to the 33rd floor offices of Rudin Management.

1998

  • In January 1998, Shane Devon Tamura was born to a LAPD Officer, Terence Tamura and mother mother, Michelle Tamura.
  • Terence Tamura is a retired LAPD cop who worked in the San Fernando Valley. He joined the department in 1967. Source

Early 2010s

  • Raised in Southern California.
  • Attended Golden Valley High School in Santa Clarita for his first three years. Where he played on the JV Football Team Source

2015–2016

  • Transferred to Granada Hills Charter High School for senior year.
  • Played as a senior running back, recorded approximately 600 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Source
  • Graduated from High School in 2016.

2016–2025

  • Moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.

2019

  • March 7, 2019 Tamura, obtained a security guard license from the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services on March 7, 2019  Source
  • December 28, 2019 Tamura obtained a Security License Source Note: He was a license Security Guard, not a private investigator. The Private Investigators Licensing Board certifies security officers This is not a PI license, but a registration required for individuals working under a licensed agency in fields regulated by the PILB, such as private security, process service. 2020

  • Tamura Worked at the Horseshoe Las Vegas hotel and casino as a surveillance department employee.

2022

June 14, 2022 Tamura obtained a concealed firearms permit from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Nevada Security License and a concealed carry permit. Source

July 2025: Cross-Country Travel to NYC

July 26, 2025 (Saturday)

  • Departed Las Vegas and drove east through Colorado.

July 27, 2025 (Sunday)

  • Traveled through Nebraska and Iowa.

July 28, 2025 (Monday)

  • 4:24 PM: Arrived in Columbia, New Jersey.
  • Continued into Manhattan, arriving later that day.

July 28, 2025: Mass Shooting at 345 Park Avenue

6:26 PM: Surveillance video showed a lone male exit a double-parked black BMW on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets carrying an M4 rifle in his right hand and wearing body armor

  • Double-parked his black BMW outside 345 Park Avenue, NYC.
  • Entered the building with an M4 rifle.
  • The building’s security camera footage shows the shooter turning right and immediately opening fire with an M4 rifle.
  • He then shot a woman who took cover behind a pillar and proceeded through the lobby, spraying it with gunfire. 
  • One additional male was shot in the lobby
  • He made his way to the elevator bank, where he shot a security guard who was taking cover behind the security desk. 

6:28 PM

  • The 911 call center started receiving calls about an active shooter inside 345 Park Avenue at 52nd Street in Manhattan, New York City

Lobby/Elevator Bank

The shooter called the elevator, which opened in the lobby. A female exited that elevator, and he allowed her to walk past him unharmed.

  • Tamura went up to the 33rd floor and began to walk the floor, firing rounds as he traveled. A woman was struck and killed. The shooter then proceeded down a hallway and shot himself in the chest.

Fatally shot:

  • shot NYPD Officer Didarul Islam (off-duty) 
  • fatally shot Wesley LePatner, a Blackstone executive.
  • Aland Etienne, building security officer 
  • Seriously wounded a female NFL employee. 

33rd Floor (Rudin Management Offices)

  • Took the elevator to the 33rd floor.
  • Killed a fourth individual.
  • Then died by suicide, shooting himself in the chest. His body was found with his rifle beside him in a hallway/stairwell.

7:15–7:30 PM:

  • Police discovered Tamura’s body on the 33rd floor and proceeded to secure the scene.

7:52 PM:

  • The building was declared secured and under control by law enforcement

Aftermath

  • A 3-page suicide note was recovered.
  • Claimed he suffered from CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy).
  • Referenced deceased NFL player Terry Long.
  • Requested his brain be donated for CTE research.
  • Expressed regret and blamed the NFL.

Car:

  • Police found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, ammunition and magazines, as well as a backpack and medication prescribed to Tamura.

The athletic career did not extend beyond high school.

  • Tamura’s athletic career was limited to high school football, and videos show him speaking after a September 2015 game in his senior season, when he played for Granada Hills Charter School in Los Angeles.

Tamura wrote in a note that he believed he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, commonly known as CTE, a brain disease associated with head injuries and often found in former football players

July 29, 2025

  • Federal agents and local police are executed a warrant of the suspect’s family home in Las Vegas, where Tamura had been living. Investigators are combing through electronic devices, weapons, and any possible writings to determine motive. So far, the FBI and NYPD believe the shooter acted alone, but the motive remains unclear.

July 30, 2025

  • Tamura purchased both the black BMW he used to drive to New York City from Nevada, as well as the murder weapon itself, from Rick, his former supervisor at the Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas where he worked as a night security guard.
  • Police interviewed Rick after he was referenced in a suicide note Tamura had in his wallet during the killings, in which he wrote, “I’m sorry, Rick,”. The rifle used in the shootings previously believed to be pieced together by the shooter was actually sold to him fully assembled by Rick for $1,400. Police said Rick told them he purchased the weapon himself and then sold it to his friend, the legality of which remains unclear.
