Murdaugh Case Files

Buster, Maggie, Paul and Alex Murdaugh

1920-2005 For three generations, members of the Murdaugh family served as the South Carolina 14th circuit solicitor, the top prosecutor representing Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton, Allendale and Colleton counties

“The function of a solicitor in South Carolina is the same of a people’s attorney or a prosecuting attorney or a district attorney in other states and that is to prosecute criminal cases,”.

Murdaugh Case Files

Day of the Murder Maggie and Paul Murdau

Timeline of the day

The Murdaugh family held enormous influence across South Carolina’s Lowcountry region. Alex Murdaugh was a prominent personal injury attorney at the Hampton law firm Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick, commonly known as PMPED. Multiple generations of the Murdaugh family had served as elected prosecutors in the 14th Judicial Circuit, creating a legal dynasty that stretched back nearly a century. The family’s status, wealth, and political connections made the Murdaugh name one of the most recognizable in the region.

The family divided much of their time between their primary Hampton residence, beach property in Edisto, and the sprawling Moselle hunting estate located in Colleton County near Islandton, South Carolina. The Moselle property included multiple homes, dog kennels, storage buildings, hunting land, and recreational areas spread across a large rural tract. Gloria frequently worked at the Moselle property helping manage household responsibilities and assisting Maggie Murdaugh with the family’s daily needs.

The Murdaugh family also kept several dogs at Moselle, including Bubba, Bourbon, Blue, and Sassy. According to later insurance-defense reports, the dogs often roamed freely around the property and near the front entrance of the home. One of the dogs, Bourbon, was specifically described in later legal documents as hyperactive, attention-seeking, and difficult to control. On the morning of February 2, 2018, Gloria Satterfield arrived at Moselle to pick up a paycheck. What began as a routine visit to the Murdaugh property would soon become one of the earliest major incidents later tied to the broader unraveling of the Murdaugh family empire.

February 2, 2018

  • Gloria Satterfield Falls at Moselle: Gloria Satterfield arrived at the Moselle property in Colleton County, South Carolina, to pick up a paycheck from the Murdaugh family after working for the family for approximately 20 years as a housekeeper and domestic assistant.
  • The Moselle property was owned by Alex Murdaugh and Maggie Murdaugh and located at 4147 and 4157 Moselle Road in Islandton, South Carolina.
  • Alex Murdaugh left the property for work at approximately 7:45 AM to 8:00 AM.
  • Maggie Murdaugh and Paul Murdaugh remained inside the house while Gloria arrived at the property.
  • The Murdaugh family’s four dogs were outside the home:
  • Bubba
  • Bourbon
  • Blue
  • Sassy
  • According to the report, Gloria walked up the brick front steps of the Moselle residence alone before falling backward down the stairs. No one witnessed the actual fall.
  • Maggie Murdaugh later stated she heard the dogs barking in an unusual manner and went outside to investigate.
  • Maggie discovered Gloria lying on the steps with a severe head injury and blood pooling on the brick landing area.
  • Maggie stated Gloria was conscious but mumbling incoherently and unable to explain what happened.
  • Paul Murdaugh came outside after hearing his mother yelling and observed Gloria lying on her back near the steps with blood visible on the landing area.
  • Maggie called 911 while property workers Ronnie Freeman and Travis Martin came to assist. Travis Martin was sent to the highway to direct EMS to the property.
  • Alex Murdaugh returned to Moselle before EMS arrived.
  • According to Alex Murdaugh and Paul Murdaugh, Gloria allegedly stated something to the effect of “the dogs tripped her up.”
  • Maggie Murdaugh later stated Gloria never directly told her how she fell.
  • Colleton County EMS arrived and evaluated Gloria at the scene.
  • EMS personnel initially considered landing a helicopter nearby but ultimately transported Gloria by ambulance to Colleton Regional Medical Center in Walterboro before transferring her by helicopter to Trident Medical Center in Charleston.
  • Gloria sustained:
  • A subdural hematoma
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Multiple rib fractures
  • A partially collapsed lung
  • Pulmonary contusions
  • Medical records later documented that Gloria reportedly told emergency medical personnel she did not know how or why she fell.

February 3 to February 19, 2018

  • Hospitalization and Complications: Gloria remained hospitalized at Trident Medical Center while undergoing treatment for her traumatic injuries.
  • Doctors determined the subdural hematoma was inoperable.
  • Gloria underwent surgery to stabilize her chest injuries and repair fractured ribs.
  • Gloria initially showed signs of improvement during portions of her hospitalization.
  • Social media updates posted by Gloria’s son Tony Satterfield documented ongoing medical complications and ICU treatment.
  • Gloria later developed pneumonia, fluid accumulation in her lungs, and worsening respiratory complications.
  • Gloria suffered cardiac arrest and required CPR before being placed on a ventilator.
  • Doctors later informed the family Gloria suffered severe brain damage and had little chance of recovery.

February 25, 2018

  • Family Learns Gloria Is Unlikely to Recover: MRI and EEG testing reportedly showed significant blood accumulation and severe neurological damage.
  • Gloria’s family was informed she had sustained catastrophic brain injury and was unlikely to regain consciousness.

February 26, 2018

  • Death of Gloria Satterfield: Gloria Satterfield was removed from life support measures at the request of her family.
  • She was briefly transferred to hospice care before dying from complications related to the February 2 fall.
  • Medical expenses related to Gloria’s treatment exceeded $650,000 according to the insurance defense report.
  • Gloria was survived by her two adult sons:
  • Tony Satterfield
  • Bryan Satterfield

November 6, 2018

  • Insurance Defense Report Evaluates Liability: Attorney R. Scott Wallinger Jr. issued a confidential “Second Comprehensive Report” to insurance representatives evaluating the anticipated wrongful death lawsuit involving Gloria Satterfield’s death. Source
  • The report concluded liability against Alex Murdaugh was “probable” under South Carolina dog liability law.
  • The report estimated potential damages at approximately $3.3 million.
  • The report noted Alex Murdaugh wished to avoid a public wrongful death lawsuit because of the potential personal and professional damage within Hampton County.

After Gloria Satterfield died from injuries sustained during her February 2018 fall at Moselle, Alex Murdaugh encouraged Gloria’s sons to pursue a wrongful death claim against him so insurance money could allegedly help support the family financially. Instead, prosecutors and later civil lawsuits alleged Alex Murdaugh secretly stole millions of dollars from the insurance settlement that was supposed to go to Gloria Satterfield’s heirs.

2019

February 242019

  • Paul Murdaugh is involved in a boating accident that results in the death of Mallory Beach. Paul is indicted on charges of boating under the influence causing death, which brings intense scrutiny to the Murdaugh family.

2020

  • Alex recommended attorney Cory Fleming, one of his close friends and former college roommate, to represent Gloria’s sons in the wrongful death case.

December 2020

  • The case was quietly settled through Alex Murdaugh’s homeowners and umbrella insurance policies for more than $4 million.
  • Gloria’s sons, Tony Satterfield and Brian Satterfield, later stated they were never told the true settlement amounts.
  • Prosecutors alleged Alex Murdaugh created a fake bank account using the name “Forge,” designed to resemble the legitimate structured settlement company Forge Consulting.
  • Settlement checks that should have gone to Gloria’s heirs were instead directed into the fake “Forge” account allegedly controlled by Alex Murdaugh.
  • According to indictments, large portions of the stolen settlement money were then used by Alex Murdaugh for:
  • Personal expenses
  • Cash withdrawals
  • Credit card payments
  • Loans
  • Property expenses
  • Drug addiction-related spending
  • Repayment of financial obligations
  • Maintaining his lifestyle and financial image
  • Investigators and prosecutors later alleged Alex operated a years-long financial fraud scheme involving stolen client funds, law firm thefts, and diverted settlement money from multiple victims beyond the Satterfield case.
  • The theft remained hidden for years until September 2021, after the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh and the collapse of Alex Murdaugh’s legal career.

September 2021

  • Attorneys representing Gloria Satterfield’s sons filed lawsuits accusing Alex Murdaugh, Cory Fleming, banker Russell Laffitte, and others of conspiring to divert the settlement funds.
  • Court records later showed that Gloria’s sons had received almost none of the millions of dollars paid out in the settlement.
  • Multiple criminal indictments followed, charging Alex Murdaugh with breach of trust, obtaining property by false pretenses, money laundering, computer crimes, and other financial offenses tied to the stolen settlement funds.
  • Cory Fleming later pleaded guilty to related financial crimes connected to the Satterfield settlement scheme.
  • Former Palmetto State Bank CEO Russell Laffitte was later convicted in federal court for financial crimes tied to the Murdaugh fraud investigations.
  • In 2022, Gloria Satterfield’s family ultimately received a significant financial recovery through settlements and restitution agreements after years of litigation and investigation.

The Gloria Satterfield settlement theft became one of the central financial scandals that exposed the broader collapse of the Murdaugh family empire and led investigators to uncover dozens of additional alleged fraud schemes connected to Alex Murdaugh

Crime Scene: Murdaugh

Warning Graphic Details

The Murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh

  • 10:11 PM Detective Laura Rutland of the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a double death scene at 4147 Moselle Road in Islandton, South Carolina.
  • Rutland first responded to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office headquarters to prepare a search warrant authorizing SLED to process the Moselle property and homicide scene. Magistrate Judge Duffie later approved the warrant for the property identified as 4147 Moselle Road.
  • Upon arriving at the crime scene near the dog kennels and farm outbuildings, Rutland observed multiple law enforcement personnel from the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division already on scene.
  • Rutland was informed that SLED would lead the homicide investigation and that she would serve as liaison to SLED Senior Special Agent David Owen.
  • Detective Rutland and Agent Owen walked through the secured crime scene together. The area had already been taped off by responding deputies and secured with multiple officers guarding the perimeter.
  • Rutland observed the body of Paul Murdaugh lying face down partially outside a storage room attached to the dog kennels. His feet were positioned inside the doorway while the rest of his body extended onto the concrete outside the room.
  • Paul’s arms and hands were underneath his body. No weapon was found near him. His body had been covered with a sheet by responding personnel.
  • Investigators observed shotgun shell wadding behind Paul’s feet inside the storage room. A rear window to the shed contained multiple holes in the glass.
  • Detective Rutland documented massive blood spatter and brain matter on the shed door and throughout the storage area. She described a catastrophic head wound exposing Paul’s cranial cavity, with portions of his brain located beside his body near his legs.
  • Rutland observed Maggie Murdaugh lying face down near the end of a carport attached to a large workshop building located approximately 20 to 30 feet from Paul’s body.
  • Maggie had visible gunshot wounds to her head, back, and legs. Investigators observed a large hole in the back of her head and a substantial pool of blood beneath her body. No weapon was found near her.
  • The bodies were identified by Alex Murdaugh, who told investigators the victims were his wife Maggie and son Paul.
  • Later that night, Agent David Owen and Detective Rutland interviewed Alex Murdaugh inside Agent Owen’s vehicle due to heavy rain at the scene. Alex was accompanied by his attorney Danny Henderson and his brother Randy Murdaugh before the interview began.
  • During overnight crime scene processing, investigators documented fresh footprints, dog tracks, and tire tracks near the outer edge of the workshop area away from the kennels.
  • Detective Rutland located sandal-style shoe impressions matching the flat sandals Maggie was wearing. The impressions indicated Maggie had been walking in one direction before turning back toward the kennels and the location where her body was ultimately found.
  • Investigators discovered a fresh bullet hole in the workshop building located across from the storage room where Paul’s body was found. Wood fragments inside the structure were consistent with a projectile exiting the wall.
  • Near Maggie’s body, investigators located clumps of hair and a broken earring near the tire of a UTV parked beside the building.
  • After the bodies were removed by the coroner, investigators dug underneath the location where Maggie’s body had been found and sifted through the soil searching for projectiles. No projectile was recovered from beneath her body.
  • A projectile was ultimately recovered from a dog house located directly behind where Maggie’s body had been lying.
  • Throughout the night, SLED agents and Colleton County deputies continued processing evidence, photographing the scene, documenting shell casings and trajectories, securing vehicles, and establishing an expanded crime scene perimeter around the Moselle kennels and surrounding outbuildings.

Discovery of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh at the Moselle Kennels

  • 10:07 PM Captain J.W. Chapman of the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office heard dispatch broadcast a call reporting two people shot at 4147 Moselle Road in Islandton, South Carolina.
  • Chapman immediately notified Colleton County detectives about the shooting call.
  • 10:19 PM Chapman marked himself on duty and began responding to Moselle. While traveling to the property, Sheriff Hill informed him the caller was Alex Murdaugh and the reported victims were members of his family.
  • Sheriff Hill advised Chapman that SLED would likely be contacted once deputies secured and assessed the homicide scene.
  • 10:26 PM Sgt. Daniel Greene became the first Colleton County unit to arrive at the Moselle property. Chapman instructed Greene by radio to establish a secure crime scene and restrict access to essential personnel only.
  • 10:37 PM Chapman arrived at Moselle and drove down a dirt driveway marked with the mailbox number “4147.” The driveway split near a large shed adjacent to the dog kennels.
  • Deputies had already secured the inner perimeter with crime scene tape and controlled all entry points into the kennel area. Only essential law enforcement personnel and emergency responders were permitted inside the scene perimeter.
  • Chapman was advised that Alex Murdaugh had surrendered a camouflage shotgun to Sgt. Greene upon Greene’s arrival. Greene secured the shotgun inside his patrol vehicle.
  • Rain had already started falling at the scene. Chapman instructed Lt. David Long to retrieve a tent to preserve evidence from the weather.
  • Chapman observed the body of Paul Murdaugh lying face down in the open doorway of a feed room attached to the dog kennels. Paul’s feet remained inside the doorway while the rest of his body extended across a concrete sidewalk and onto the gravel driveway.
  • Paul’s body had been covered with a pink sheet by emergency responders. Chapman briefly lifted the sheet to determine whether a firearm was located near the body. No weapon was visible.
  • Paul was wearing a t-shirt, shorts, and shoes. His hands remained underneath his body. Chapman observed catastrophic trauma to Paul’s head, stating most of Paul’s brain was lying on the ground to the left side of his body along with fragments of skull.
  • Investigators observed high-velocity blood spatter on the upper section of the kennel room doorway and ceiling area. Multiple holes appearing to be fresh damage were visible in the rear window and opposite side of the feed room.
  • Chapman documented that Paul’s Apple iPhone was lying on top of his body. The phone screen was blank and did not appear to contain visible blood.
  • Chapman then observed the body of Maggie Murdaugh lying face down near the edge of a large covered shed approximately 30 feet from Paul’s body.
  • Maggie’s head faced toward the dog kennels. She was wearing a blue patterned romper and shoes. Chapman observed traumatic head injuries as well as apparent gunshot wounds to her upper right back, lower left back, and right leg.
  • Investigators observed brain matter several feet from Maggie’s head and large clumps of hair on the ground to her right side. Her body had also been covered with a pink sheet by emergency responders.
  • Multiple large-caliber rifle casings were scattered across the gravel driveway between Maggie and Paul’s bodies. No firearm was visible near either victim.
  • Based on the visible gunshot injuries, physical evidence, and Alex Murdaugh identifying the victims as his wife and son, Sheriff Hill officially requested SLED assistance for the homicide investigation.
  • Detective Laura Rutland was redirected to obtain a search warrant authorizing processing of the Moselle property.
  • Lt. David Long arrived with a tent that was placed over Maggie’s body to protect evidence from the rain while investigators processed the scene.
  • Deputy William Pruitt maintained the official crime scene log while additional deputies secured the perimeter around the kennels and outbuildings.
  • Detective Rutland later arrived with a signed search warrant before SLED Crime Scene investigators reached the property. She was assigned as the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office liaison assisting SLED Senior Special Agent David Owen.
  • A portion of Alex Murdaugh’s 911 call was played for SLED investigators before Agent Owen and Detective Rutland interviewed Alex inside Owen’s vehicle because of the rain conditions.
  • During crime scene processing, Chapman observed evidence indicating Paul Murdaugh had sustained at least two shotgun wounds while standing inside or near the feed room doorway. Blood patterns and projectile trajectories suggested one shot traveled upward while another continued through the room and exited through a rear window.
  • Investigators recovered shotgun pellets from pine trees located behind the kennel structure. Two spent 12-gauge shotgun shell casings were located near Paul’s body.
  • Chapman documented an indentation in the ground near Paul’s body consistent with a projectile impact. Investigators later recovered a rifle projectile from the dirt inside the impression.
  • Multiple .300 Blackout shell casings were found between Maggie and Paul’s bodies and beneath Maggie’s body.
  • Investigators identified at least one rifle round impact in the wall of a nearby barn and recovered another rifle projectile from a nearby dog house.
  • Detectives observed tire tracks running beneath the covered barn area toward the roadway. Those tracks were later determined to belong to a caretaker who had been feeding dogs at the property earlier in the day.
  • Investigators also observed a pattern of small shoe impressions resembling flats or flip-flops near the barn wall. The impressions appeared consistent with pacing movements.
  • Paul Murdaugh’s truck was parked 40 to 60 yards away near a separate tractor shed. Maggie’s Mercedes-Benz was not present at the kennel scene. Alex Murdaugh was driving his Chevrolet Suburban.
  • Chapman later stated the integrity of the crime scene remained secure throughout overnight processing and into daylight hours while SLED Crime Scene investigators completed evidence collection and forensic examination of the Moselle kennels and surrounding property.

The body of an adult male was observed face down in the open doorway to a feed room that was positioned at the end of a long run of dog kennels.

  • White male lying face down at an angle away from the building, had on a t-shirt, shorts and shoes, his feet were in the doorway to a storage room attached at the end of the dog kennels, and his body was outside the room laying across the outside concrete pad.
  • His arms/hands were underneath his body. body.
  • Wadding to a shot gun shell was observed behind the decedent’s feet, inside the shed. A rear window to the shed had several holes in the glass. Large amounts of blood spatter and brain/skull matter were on the door to the shed and on items within the storage building. Detectives observed a pool of blood all around his head, and he had a large opening where the top of his head was, exposing the entire inner cranial cavity, his brain was next to his body near his legs on the left side.
  • There was no weapon by the body
  • there was high-velocity blood splatter on the upper half of the open door and ceiling area just inside the doorway.
  • 4 to 5 holes were also visible in the window and the opposite end of the feed room that appeared to be new damage.
  • An Apple iPhone was lying on top of Paul’s body. The phone did not appear to have any blood on it and the screen was blank.

The deceased female was approximately 20-30 feet (estimate) from the male’s body, located at the end of a carport section of a large workshop type building. She too had a traumatic head injury, along with what appeared to be gunshot wounds to the upper right back, lower left back and right leg.

  • The female was face down also with her arms and hands underneath her body. She had an obvious gunshot wound to her head. There was a large hole in the back of her head and wounds to her back and legs. There was a large pool of blood underneath her head.
