Grant Solomon 2002 – 2020
Aaron had big dreams for Grant, envisioning a future for him in professional baseball, perhaps even at an Ivy League school. To that end, he scheduled an exclusive and costly appointment for Grant at a private baseball clinic at the Ward Performance Institute (WPI) in Gallatin, Tennessee, on July 20, 2020—a location roughly 50 miles away from their home in Franklin.
On the morning of July 20th, Grant arrived at WPI to find his father already waiting for him in the parking lot. Not long after, tragedy struck. Aaron became the sole witness to what he described as a horrific accident. According to Aaron, Grant was retrieving his baseball gear from the bed of his truck, which was parked on a steep incline. He claimed the truck either malfunctioned or wasn’t properly placed in park, causing it to roll backward and drag Grant over 60 feet into a ditch. Grant was rushed to Sumner Regional Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving.
However, as details emerged, a cloud of suspicion quickly gathered over the incident. Grant’s body didn’t show the extensive injuries one would expect from being dragged beneath a hot truck for such a distance. Aside from a scrape on his cheek, his only significant injury was a blow to the back of his head, which became the official cause of death: blunt force trauma. The Gallatin Police Department’s handling of the case only deepened the mystery. They spent a mere 57 minutes at the scene, took Aaron’s statement, and then abruptly closed the case—without conducting an accident reconstruction or a more thorough investigation.
A bizarre 911 call from Aaron added another layer to the enigma. During the call, Aaron mentioned three men were helping Grant in the ditch, but the police never identified these men or even publicly acknowledged their presence. If they did investigate this lead, they certainly did not share any findings with Angie. The lack of transparency and thoroughness left Angie and Gracie in a state of disbelief and devastation. Grant had been their rock, and without him, their world felt incomprehensibly empty.
In the aftermath of Grant’s death, Aaron’s behavior only grew more perplexing. Despite the traumatic incident and his claim that the truck malfunctioned, Aaron continued driving the very Toyota truck that had supposedly killed his son for months afterward. He also chose not to request an autopsy, despite Grant having COVID-19 at the time of his death, which could have influenced his medical condition or the accident itself. At Grant’s eulogy, Aaron went to great lengths to explain how one of his friends found Grant’s hat, cell phone, and glasses in the ditch at WPI and returned them to him—another glaring example of the police’s shoddy work and mishandling of evidence.
