Ashley Benefield ran into the master bedroom and grabbed a gun that she legally owned. Doug Benefield followed her and he barged into the bedroom “with a fierce scowl.”
Ashley Benefield pointed the gun at Doug Benefield and ordered him to leave her alone and leave the home. “He postured like a mixed martial arts fighter (blading, hands parallel with his chest/shoulders, moving his arms/hands in small circular motions) and advanced toward her.
Doug Benefield kept moving toward her and She kept shooting. When he fell backward, Ashley Benefield ran to a neighbor’s home yelling for help.
First responders said it was clear the victim – Doug Benefield – had been shot at least two times in the master bedroom.
A medical examiner reported one of the rounds entered the outside of his right leg and exited the inside of his right leg. The other round appeared to have skipped the right bicep and entered Doug Benefield’s chest cavity from
his right side. But

On September 27, 2020, dispatchers in Manatee County received a 911 call around 6 p.m. from a neighbor John Sant to report a shooting at the home. Ashley had walked to his house holding a .45 caliber gun and said Doug had attacked her and she shot him. Doug died an hour later at a local hospital.

Doug Benefield Autopsy
The State’s top Medical Examiner, Dr. Russell Vega, conducted the official autopsy and determined that Doug was shot in the chest “From front to back”
But Investigators determined that Doug had been shot twice while he was turned away from Ashley. He was shot once in the leg and once in the arm and that bullet traveled into his chest cavity.

- Ashley also accused Doug of poisoning both her and Renee Benefield. Renee’s autopsy concluded she died from coronary artery sclerosis, a heart condition.

2020

- In spring 2020, Ashley informed Doug she planned to move to Maryland with their daughter and her mother Alicia Byers.

- On September 27, 2020, Doug packed a U-Haul truck with the family’s belongings as they prepared to move to Maryland together.
- Later that evening, a neighbor called 911 after Ashley arrived at his home holding a .45 caliber handgun and stated she had shot Doug after he attacked her. Doug died approximately one hour later at a local hospital. Source
